Chapter 6: Building your Connected Learning Community

Chapter 6: Building your Connected Learning Community

In today’s day and age, most people have access to the Internet on a 24/7 basis. “Building Your Connected Learning Community” mainly explains why it is important to network with other professional through the Internet. “Networks are where you find ideas and information to bring back to your existing communities to develop into programs, to use to create action research, and to implement in your schools” (Nussbaum-Beach, 92). Finding new people to grow ideas with and start collaborative projects can benefit almost any professional. This chapter provides the reader with tips and tricks on how to get started. For example, on of the first tips stated is this: “Establish one consistent username across all networks to build and manage your online reputation and identity” (Nussbaum-Beach, 93).

For my future profession as an occupational therapist, as well as almost any health care profession, social networking will allow me to access information, debate health care policy and practice issues, promote health behaviors, engage with the public, and educate patients, caregivers, and more. At any moment, I could search “occupational therapy” on any social media platform and find new information that I have never thought about or considered before, and this is why social networking is so important. However, it is important to understand what sources are trustworthy. The health care industry is rapidly growing and changing, and without the Internet, it would be much harder for new ideas and concepts to spread.

  1. Hey Taylor! I agree with the point about the amount of trust that is needed for different sources. In society today, many people search for immediacy with out taking consideration for accuracy. If people do not begin to investigate the sources, false information can quickly spread.

  2. Hi Taylor! After reading your blog, I found your perspective very interesting. I also want to go into the healthcare field after graduation, and I think using social media and networking to find out information regarding patient care and advances in the healthcare field. I agree with you that the without the internet, it would be much harder for new ideas and concepts to spread. I think that social media and networking will help individuals in any career field, but especially those in and looking to go into the healthcare field. I really enjoyed reading your post!

  3. Hi Taylor, I really enjoyed some of your thoughts on chapter 6. I was specifically interested in your comments on just typing in "occupational therapy" on any social media platform. This is a smart way to just get your personal learning network started. You don't have to base it around certain people; just start small and build from there. Like you said, it's also very important to ensure what you're reading is accurate. Once you do this, you can connect and learn things by just starting small.
